The district around the train station is the latest industrial centre in Zumaia. The companies settled on this area, along the bank of the Urola River, are related to the production of machine tools and other machinery for the manufacture of wood. Among them:

  • Urpemak, S.L. (1956 – 2009): founded in 1956 in a small workshop in the Ondartxo area, behind St. Telmo Street, at first, they just supplied mechanization works to other companies. They later started producing diesel engines as well as machine tools, which became their speciality. After several name changes, in 1994 they created the firm Urpermak, S.L., which was committed to research and development and even asked for several patents related to injection machinery.
  • Egurko, S.Coop. (1969 – 2012): it was the result of the merger between Zumai, S.C.I. and Talleres Urgain. Due to its work, in addition to several business alliances, from the middle of the 70’s on it became one of the main manufacturers of machinery for wood derivatives in Spain. Nevertheless, as a consequence of the creation of big manufacturer groups in Germany and Italy and the deep crisis of the furniture production field in Spain, the company’s competitiveness later declined.
  • Talleres Aizape, S.A. (1960 – 1994): though they began providing other companies with mechanization services, they soon embarked on milling cutters design and manufacture. The company disappeared in 1994, being replaced by Talleres Mecánicos Xumai, S.L., which abandoned the production of machine tools.
