From the 15th century onwards, Zumaia developed an important shipbuilding activity. In the 16th century, at the zenith of this industry, there were up to ten shipyards along the riverside of the Urola and around the docks. The ships there produced were bound for trading along the European coasts, the fisheries in Newfoundland and even for the transoceanic trade (Carrera de Indias).

Though from the end of the 16th century onwards Zumaia lost its major role in this field, some private initiatives led its rebound from the end of the 19th century and, especially, at the beginning of the 20th century. Some firms, such as Astilleros Eraso S.A. and Arrizabalaga y Olasagasti, S.R.C., had a major role in the new rise of shipbuilding activity in Zumaia:

  • Astilleros Eraso S.A.: founded in 1903. It started developing mechanic equipment, but it soon focused on shipbuilding. It became the main shipbuilder of the province of Gipuzkoa, thanks to the opening of a second shipyard in Pasaia.
  • Arrizabalaga y Olasagasti, S.R.C.: since its foundation, in 1925, it became one of the main builders of wooden ships, along with the shipyard in Bedua. They were specialized in the building and repair of fishing boats.
