During the first half of the 20th century, Etxezarreta Street and its surroundings were one of the main industrial sites of Zumaia. In fact, some of the most relevant companies in the industrial history of the town chose this location, due to its position, near the port. Two of them had an outstanding role in the future industrial development of Zumaia:
- Yeregui Hermanos S.A., founded in 1922. It was specialized in the production of sailing and industrial engines, first internal-combustion and semi-diesel engines, then, diesel engines. It became one of the two most important industries of Zumaia (with Carmelo Unanue), since it was one of the first diesel engine manufacturers in Spain and a highly renowned company in the fishing boats market in the Cantabric coast. Before its construction, this site was occupied by the shipyard Ajuria, Yeregui y Cia.
- Otto Holke. This German entrepreneur founded his company in Zumaia in 1935, in the former headquarters of the Talleres Askar. He had a large technical knowledge and he brought from his home country a large number of innovations, hitherto unknown in the Basque Country and Spain. Apart from being a pioneering company in the field of machine tool construction, mainly focused on the production of milling machines, they also manufactured diesel engines, under license of Yeregui Hermanos. Besides, they contributed to create an important pool of professional mechanicians.
